Bringing Nature Back to the Waterfront

July 2018

The heart of an old coal – fired power plant will be reused to form the foundation of a new conservation area thanks to the partnership between The Lakeview Community Partners (LCPL) and the Credit Valley Conservation, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and Region of Peel. The power plant, long seen as a source of pollution by Lakeview Projects that are side – by – side; Lakeview Village, a vibrant, sustainable community with a mix of residential, commercial, and institutional properties on the site of the former power plant; and the Lakeview Waterfront Connection, a 26 hectare future conservation area just East of the former power plant site.

The conservation area is being built into the lake using clean fill to create a new land base and will boast a variety of natural habitats and opportunities for waterfront recreation. The LCPL is a partnership of the Greater Toronto Area’s leading community builders that includes TACC Construction Limited, Greenpark Group, CCI Development Group, Branthaven Homes, and Argo Development Corporation. LCPL took ownership of the former power plant site from OPG in the spring of 2018 and have generously donated the material, as well as the cost of breaking it up and transporting it to the conservation area site next door. In total, there will be an estimated 20,000 tons of concrete recycled!
